Places To Visit In Selangor

Whether you are a tourist or simply a local, there are a few places in Selangor that you have to visit! Here are five great places you should go to.

Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a limestone hill located in Gombak. It has a series of caves and cave temples. The name Batu Caves comes from the Batu River which flows past the hill. Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. When the caves were in pristine state before 1860, they were once used by the Besisi people (orang asli) as transit shelters when they went out hunting from their jungle hamlets. Now, the cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India, dedicated to God Murugan. The cave is the focal point of the annual Thaipusam festival in Malaysia and attracts over more than 1.5 million pilgrims, making it one of the largest gatherings in history.

The cave site is also known for its numerous species of monkeys that visitors feed and find interesting. Besides being a tourist attraction, Batu Caves is also the centre of rock climbing development for the past 10 years. The cave offers more than 160 climbing routes.

In the last decade, the surrounding area has changed from a small village to industrial estates and new housing and shops.
